European Maritime Days - Greece

The European Maritime Day 2015 Piraeus celebrations will kick off on May 28 with a conference focusing on ports and coasts as engines for Blue Growth. The countrys largest port will also celebrate its maritime community and tradition with high-level sessions and workshops, an exhibition and happenings throughout the city.

European Maritime Day is celebrated annually throughout Europe on May 20, Piraeus highlights the maritime communitys leading role in the future of the Blue economy by offering a platform for policymakers to discuss, debate and exchange best practices with regard to the seas and oceans, and the opportunities they offer as well as the role of ports and coastal cities, which are at the forefront of the Blue economy.

During the Piraeus conference, ministers, commissioners, CEOs and experts will discuss the spectrum of opportunities and great challenges that coasts and seas present, share best practices and develop new synergies. On May 28, a plenary session will introduce the main political challenges of coastal cities and ports.

In the meantime, sector professionals and insiders will have a chance to meet, exchange experiences and discuss the latest developments at the exhibition to be held on May 28-29 at the Athens Concert Hall.

At the same time, Piraeus will celebrate European Maritime Day and its rich maritime history and culture with citywide events on May 30-31 including excursions by the sea, live performances, music events, marine sports, open sailing days and trips around the coast. Local restaurants will provide special menus and offer traditional seafood dishes and wine. Visitors will also have the chance to explore Piraeus archaeological sites and industrial landmarks.

Lectures, maritime industry job fairs, the latest in marine documentaries, educational events, photography shows featuring sea and island treasures, aim to raise awareness of the importance of the sea on a local, regional and global scale.

The four-day event is jointly supported by the European Commission, the Ministry for Economy, Infrastructure, Shipping and Tourism, and the municipality of Piraeus.
